Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The mission of the MHZ – Old Village Museum, Kumrovec, is to preserve the material and intangible heritage of Hrvatsko Zagorje, with an emphasis on the transmission of knowledge via various museum and educational workshops, ad hoc exhibitions, the reconstruction of some of the traditional events and craft production. By becoming acquainted with the inherited material and intangible heritage of Hrvatsko Zagorje, today’s young people will learn to transfer some of the skills and some of the knowledge about their roots to future generations, thereby preserving their own identity.

In a picturesque basin, along the central course of the Sutla River, at the foot of Cesargradska and Kunšperk Hills is located the one-time possession of the counts of Cesargradska, Kumrovec. Today the centre of the settlement is preserved and works as an open-air museum and an ethno-park, one unique in the Republic of Croatia because this in situ museum shows not only the architecture of a time, but also the history related to the area, and the manner of living of the people of Zagorje. In forty restored dwellings and outbuildings permanent exhibition displays are located, showing the life of the Sutla area at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. At the entry to the hamlet is the old grade school, with a classroom in which there are desks and the teaching aids of the beginning of the 20th century. In the central part of the one-time Kumrovec settlement, today the Museum, is the former holding of the extended family of Josip Broz Tito with its historical and ethnographic contents. As well as the preserved architecture of the stone built and the sulphate smeared cottage the museum also keeps valuable exhibits that are thematically arranged in the structures and show the crafts, trades and customs of Hrvatsko Zagorje at the turn of the centuries (19/20). “Halt time for a moment, enjoy and get to know the beauty of winter and the fragrance of the bread ovens, spring and the buzzing of the bees, summer and the cool of the bowers and lush autumn full of fruits and the palette of colours that autumn brings us”.

Year of foundation: 1953.
