The historic building in which the Boerhaave Museum is located was originally the nunnery of St Caecilia dating from the early 15th century. Shortly before 1600 it was converted into a ''plaque hospital and madhouse''. In 1635 it became an University hospital. It was here, around 1720, that Herman Boerhaave gave his famous sickbed lessons that drew medical students to Leiden from around the world. The building is used as a museum since 1991.
As the national treasury of scientific endeavours, the museum shows some 400 years of advances in knowledge. Developments in the various sciences can be viewed in 24 rooms on two levels. The emphasis is on contributions from the Netherlands.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Mauritshuis, a unique 17th-century palace, is one of the most beautiful examples of Dutch classicist architecture. In 1820 the Dutch state bought the Mauritshuis for the purpose of housing the Royal Cabinet of Paintings. The oldest part of the collection consists of the paintings owned in the 18th century by the stadholder, Prince Willem V of Orange-Nassau (1748-1806). In 1815 his son, King Willem I (1772-1843), handed over these paintings to the Dutch state, thus providing the basis of the Royal Cabinet of Paintings, now called the Royal Picture Gallery. The oldest museum of the Netherlands opened its doors in 1822. At first the building also housed the Royal Cabinet of Rarities, another collection that had been owned by the stadholders. Only in 1875 did the entire Mauritshuis become available for the collection of paintings. The collection currently consists of some 800 paintings, 50 miniatures, 20 pieces of sculpture, and a few drawings and prints.

Abraham Bredius ( 1855-1946) became known mainly as a Rembrandt expert, a collector, director of the Royal Picture Gallery ''Mauritshuis'' in The Hague and as a scientific investigator of historical archives. Even at a very advanced age, Bredius was still consulted on the attribution of paintings.
In 1922 Bredius moved to Monaco. He sold his house at Prinsegracht to the municipality of The Hague, giving his collection to them on loan. At his death in 1946 it turned out that he had bequeathed all of his loans to the Mauritshuis and his private collection, mainly consisting of paintings, drawings, porcelain and silver objects to the city of The Hague.

Escher in the Palace is dedicated to the work of Holland's most famous graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972). Nearly all his prints as well as sketches and archive material are displayed in varying exhibitions spread over four floors of the building. You can observe the change from the real world to the constructed worlds he gave us. Visual illusion is a key word in his work. In Eschers Room you'll become a visual illusion yourself by changing your own proportions: a virtual reality programme gives you a feeling of being inside Escher's world.
The former Palace has been bought by Queen Emma, the great-grandmother of Queen Beatrix. Emma lived there until 1891, and after that Queen Wilhelmina. Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix held their official receptions at the palace.
