Highlights of Frisian culture and modern and contemporary Dutch art give the Museum its versatile and distinctive character. Fresh, provocative works of art and antique objects covered with the patina of age are juxtaposed: 17th-century Frisian silver, portraits from the 16th and 17th centuries, Frisian costumes, 18th-century period rooms, contemporary Dutch art with paintings, photographs, video art, installations and prints, the new archaeological presentation 'Super Terpen', the halls of the 16th-century Chancellery...
Temporary exhibitions are organised at regular intervals.

The Verzets Museum is part of the Fries Museum. In the museum you will be tangled with the dilemmas of the Second World War. The museums central theme is ''choosing, then and now''. Apart from that, a chronological survey is at display, running from the days of The Great War up to the present time. The Museum is also a place of remembrance and reflection. You will find the names of all 290 persons who lost their lives in the Frisian resistance and the names of more than 600 Jewish citizens who were expelled from Friesland and murdered.

The Dekema Foundation

The Dekema State (manor house) has evolved from a simple, easy to defend rectangular stone house, called 'stins' in Frisian. In the 16th century a Camstra heiress married Hette van Dekema who gave the house his name.
The house has been extensively restored (1996-2000) and become an example of a traditional Frisian State furnished in the style and fashion of the period before WW II. The aim has been to create the impression that the owners have just stepped outside for a moment and will soon be back. The museum shows all the things the owners might have been using.
The original furniture and paintings have been supplemented with loans from the Fries Museum and other sources.

The museum ''het Admiraliteitshuis'' displays popular regional art, yesterdays childrens toys, ceramics and a textile and a silverware collection. There is also a exhibition about St. Boniface, the English bishop who came to Dokkum and was murdered in 754 AD in the neighbourhood of Dokkum.
The museum is housed in the former Admirality building from 1618. It originally housed the so-called ''sea office'', which was responsible for the protection of the sea trade by means of escort or even naval warfare. Adjoining the building is a beautiful garden with a monumental entrance.

The museum aims to maintain the cottages in their original state and collects and exhibits objects that are linked to the old inshore fishing industry including the life of the inhabitants of the coastal villages. The museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions on different themes.
