The Room for Photography

Malmöhusvägen 1
SE-20124 Malmö (Skane län)

Google Maps

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The Room for Photography is a centre for displaying photography through exhibitions, seminars and workshops.
In a world where truths and borders are in a constant state of flux, the Room for Photography will continuously question and redefine storytelling through images.
The goal is to have a space that breathes of life where involved visitors will be able to deepen their interest and knowledge of photography and it`s role in cultural history and storytelling, as well as its function as an artistic expression, a means of influence and a source of knowledge.
Photography as a media is becoming increasingly more important in how we show and experience contemporary society. Therefore it`s important that the museums have an active part in collecting, preserving and distributing photographs. It`s a media that in today`s society has a strong potential as a means of conveying values and creating role models.
Therefore it`s important to create an arena where we can observe the problems and intricacies with the photographic expression and analyze it`s uses from several different perspectives, such as gender, class and ethnicity.

At Malmö Museer you have the possibility of coming onboard a real submarine, U3.
Sense the feeling of being living very densely to other crew members. Imagine what it would be like to find your self hanging between the water surface and the bottom of the ocean. The only thing you can not experience is the smell on board after being several weeks under water.
Where do you sleep? Is the toilet working 100 meters under the sea level? How do you cook on board? Welcome onboard and get some answers!

The Costal Submarines (U1 - U9) 1941-1944

During the middle of the Second World War nine smaller submarines were built. This type of submarine was the first with a fully Swedish design. By reducing the size, more submarines could be built at the same cost. Responsible was Navy Engineer Swenzén. It is also the first completely welded pressure hull, a construction method developed at the Kockum Shipyard in Malmö (Kockums Mekaniska Verkstad AB).
These small costal submarines were constructed and launched during the years of 1941-1944, five at Kockums and four at the Naval Shipyard in Karlskrona. U3 was built at the Naval Shipyard in Karlskrona.
In the earlier submarines the propulsion was diesel engines at the surface and electrical engines when submerged. This caused a stop in propulsion when switching over from one system to the other and delayed the dive. With the new diesel electrical system the only thing you had to do was to stop the diesel engine. The dive time was reduced to less than 30 seconds.
After the Second World War all Swedish submarines of this type were modified (1952-1953) and equipped with a snorting system. This allowed the diesel engine to run when being at periscope depth and it became possible to recharge the battery without surfacing. The conning tower was modified to carry the snorting system and one of the periscopes was removed. Also the external stern tube and the anti-aircraft gun were removed.
Operation "Museum Submarine" began in 1965 when U3 was towed from Gothenburg to Kockums Shipyard in Malmö. The submarine was cut in three pieces and lifted to the position it has now. The openings fore and aft for visitors were made and the submarine was restored as much as possible.

At the Form/Design Center you will meet the best and the latest in Swedish and Scandinavian design. Every year we present some twenty exhibitions on architecture, design, industrial design and handicraft. We also have a permanent collection installation, "The beauty of everyday life", in which we showcase the best from the Swedish furniture, textile, lighting and art industries.

Our shop offers a wide variety of Scandinavian products with good design. And in our café, you can get a nice cup of coffee and a bite to eat, while browsing the latest design periodicals and magazines. Occasionally, we also arrange lectures and debates there.

Form/Design Center is operated by the regional branch of Svensk Form in Skåne. Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design) is a non-profit organization promoting good design. Founded by Nils Månsson Mandelgren and initially named Svenska Slöjdföreningen (The Swedish Handicraft Society), it is the world`s first and oldest design association.

Form/Design Center in Malmö set out in 1964 and is the oldest design centre in Sweden.

Form/Design Center is located in Hedmanska gården( Hedman courtyard) next to Lilla Torg in Malmö, a large granary built by the merchant Gabriel Hedman in 1850. Dating from the 16th century, the yard and the surrounding buildings are declared a historic site by the authorities.
