The intensive building activity on the castle cliff was already developed at the start of the 12th century. The castle’s architecture may be divided into three characteristic parts – the upper castle, the middle castle and the lower courtyard. In the first half of the 12th cent. an advanced fortification complex was already built here, the central object of which was a round tower in the upper castle. In the 1220’s a spacious, monumental Roman palace was built, a square four-storey building that stands to the present day. In the last third of the 14th cent. under the government of Ludovít I the Great a new forecourt was built on to the western side of the older core, and which is today called the middle courtyard. In the first half of the 15th cent. the construction process was completed by the construction of a lower courtyard. From 1465 the originally royal castle passed into the ownership of various important noble families. The first to own it were the Zápolsky family, after them the Thurzo family and from 1638 to the mid-20th cent. the Csáky family. In 1781 the castle was burnt down and gradually fell to ruin. Conservation-architectural and archeological research connected with gradual restoration work began in 1970. The first museum exhibition was opened in 1983 in the cellars of the castle palace. The Zápolsky reconstruction work continues to the present day.
