Velebit is the longest mountain of the Dinaric system. It rises along 145 km in a gentle northwest-southeast curve between Vratnik saddle and the Zrmanja valley. The saddles diagonally divide its giant belly and represent the traditional division of the mountain range into: the northern area (between Vratnik and Veliki Alan), the central area (between Veliki Alan and Baske Ostarije), the southern area (between Ostarije and Mali Alan) and the southeastern area (between Veliki Alan and the upper Zrmanja valley). Its western border is Velebit Channel of the Adriatic Sea, while to the east it borders with Lika-Gacka plateau at 425-600 m above sea level. Its width, in air line terms, varies between 30 km in the north and only 10 km in the south. Inspite of the fact that it leaves the impression of a colossal mountain, Velebit is not particularly high. Its highest peak - Vaganski vrh - is only 1757 m high.

"Gacka Museum is located in a Historicist building constructed between the the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is surrounded by buildings dating to the Military Border period (18th and 19th centuries).
The National Anti-Fascist Council of the People’s Liberation of Croatia (ZAVNOH) was founded here in 1943. ZAVNOH was the highest political and representative body of the anti-fascist movement in Croatia during the Second World War.
The museum's permanent exhibition is related to Otočac and the Gacka Valley from prehistory to the present.
The Iapodian archaeology display features bronze, ceramic, and amber items of the Illyrian Iapodes tribe that dwelt in this area from the 9th century BC to 34 BC. The items are on loan from the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, which has been researching Iapodean culture for a number of years.
The ethnographic exhibition comprises agricultural tools, a pottery wheel, the reconstruction of a traditional room, and other items related to the traditional way of life in the region.
The memorial exhibition of the famous colorist painter Stojan Aralica (1883–1980) displays oil paintings, drawings, personal papers, documents, photographs, painting accessories, and books.
The visual arts display features recent works by local artists from Croatia such as I. Lovrenčić, S. Golac, V. Gecan and S. Sikirica.
The history display is related to Otočac in the Croatian Homeland War. It exhibits light and heavy weapons, fragments of shells, and aircraft bombs, and presents the chronology of the War through photographs and other documents that attest to the damage in Otočac. The exhibition of documents called 900 Years of the Town of Otočac is a part of the permanent History Exhibition." (MDC)

"The museum was founded in 1962. It is located in the palace of the Vukasović family, one of the most respected and influential aristocratic families of Senj. The palace was built in the Gothic-Renaissance style in the 14th and 15th centuries. It represents an exceptional example of the profane architecture of Senj.

The museum's permanent exhibition features: an Archaeological and Hydro-Archaeological Collection (comprising archaeological finds such as stone monuments, sculptures of divinities, architectural elements, and tombs), a Collection of Texts in the Glagolitic Script and Glagolitic Printing, Senj’s Maritime Affairs though History, the Senj Intellectual Circle, Senj and its Inhabitants in the Croatian Homeland War, the Bunjevci Ethnographic Collection, and the Velebit Natural History Collection.

In the Middle Ages, Senj was known for the Glagolitic script. Glagolitic was probably formed in the 11th century as a tool for evangelising the Slavs. Glagolitic stone monuments (and their facsimiles) exhibited in the museum attest to the development and use of Glagolitsa in the area during the 14th and 15th centuries. A Glagolitic printing house was founded in Senj in 1494. It was among the first printing houses in Eastern Europe. Two known incunabula were printed there: Senjski glagoljski misal and Spovid općena.

The Bunjevci Ethnographic Collection adds a specific quality to the museum. The Bunjevci are the most numerous Croatian ethnic group, originating from western Herzegovina and western Bosnia. They migrated to the Velebit area, to parts of Lika and to Gorski Kotar in the 16th and 17th centuries. They arrived in Senj and its surrounding area in 1605 in search of pastures and fertile soil. Today they live mostly in the Bačka region of Serbia (a province of Vojvodina) and southern Hungary. One of the traditional Bunjevci activities, wool production (ranging from sheep shearing to wool processing), is presented. Also displayed are Bunjevci cultural items: cooperage and smithy equipment, costumes, pottery, musical instruments, looms, and other related items.

The Senj Intellectual Circle includes famous Croatian writers born in Senj in the 19th century: S. S. Kranjčević (1865–1908), M. Ogrizović (1877–1923) and P. Ritter Vitezović (1652–1713) - writer, historian and linguist. The writers’ busts are displayed, while images and documents (mainly facsimiles) reflect their lives and works.

Senj’s maritime life is illustrated though votive images of seamen, ship equipment, parts of ships, and hydro-archaeological items (amphorae) coming from the coast of Senj.

The museum holds natural history and geological items from Velebit. The oldest examples date back to prehistory.

The museum also houses a specialist library (Seniensia) with old and new archival materials, a smaller collection of paintings, a collection of photographs and postcards, a collection of weapons and military equipment, and a numismatic collection.

The museum, together with the Senj Museum Society, has published the scientific review, Senjski zbornik (Proceedings of Senj), since 1965.

Lukovo Local History Collection

The collection is located in a fisherman’s house in Lukovo, a village south of Senj. The collection comprises ethnographic and archaeological items collected by Branko Rogić (a local fisherman and chronicler, collector and founder of the collection) over many years. Most of the exhibits are items of everyday use (dishes, farming and fishing tools, clothes, and similar items), musical instruments, ship models, and different types of amphorae (from the local waters, dated from the 1st to 4th centuries AD).

Apart from the fisherman’s house, a tuna observation point (skala) has also been renovated."(MDC)

"The Nehaj Fortress is the symbol of the town of Senj. It is located on Trbušnjak Hill, which is named after the town that rests on its eastern slope. The fortress was built in the 16th century from material that was taken from the ruins of churches, monasteries, and houses that were located outside the city walls. The Uskoks used the fortress as their stronghold when defending the town and preparing attacks against the Turks and the Venetians.

A cistern, or water well, is located inside the fortress. Three coats of arms can be observed above the well: the coat of arms of the captain and general of the Croatian Military Border, Ivan Lenković, under whose supervision the fortress was built in 1558; the coat of arms of the Archduke of Gradac who was also the ruler of Senj; and the coat of arms of the captain who succeeded Lenković.

The ground floor of the fortress housed a fireplace in the centre with rooms for men and weapons around it. The foundations of the small Early Romanesque Church of St. George (11th c.) can also be observed on the ground floor. Rooms for the officers and commanders of the fortress were located on the first floor. The second floor housed a battery of 11 heavy cannons; today it provides space for cultural and musical events, scientific conferences, and other cultural happenings. The top of the fortress is used as a belvedere.

The Nehaj Fortress houses a collection entitled The Uskoks of Senj andthe Senj Captains of the Coast and the following exhibitions: The Churches of Senj through History; The Coats of Arms of the Town and the Noblemen of Senj; and The Nehaj Fortress 1558 – 2008.“ (Text: MDC, picture: Senj Grad)

The Batana House in Rovinj is concerned with the history of the batana which is the local type of fishing vessel. This is the first museum in the Mediterranean to be dedicated to a fishing vessel. The batana is a flat bottom wooden fishing vessel and it has been created and used in this area for centuries. The museum uses multimedia to help tell the story of the batana as well as projections and models.

Ivan Mestrovic Foundation

The Ivan Mestrovic Palace was built in Split between 1931 and 1939. Mestrovic himself made the original plans based on his own design, the architects Harold Bilinic and Lavoslav Horvat developed them, and the builder Marin Marasovic was in charge of the works. The construction was built section by section, starting from the East and ending with the western parts, and it was designed to serve living, working, and exhibition purposes.

Ivan Mestrovic and his family resided in their palace at Meje from the summer of 1932. In 1941, Mestrovic left for Zagreb, while his wife and children remained in Split for another year. In the owner’s absence, it was Dr. Milan Curcin who first took care of the artist’s house and property (1942-1947), and Dr. Cvito Fiskovic took over between 1947 and 1952. The palace, later converted into the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery, was inhabited by several families between 1947 and 1965.
In 1952 in his will Ivan Mestrovic made a donation to the Republic of Croatia, which made possible the founding of a museum institution - the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery. The Gallery was ceremoniously opened for the public on 9th September 1952.
The Gallery was under the jurisdiction of the Conservation Institute for Dalmatia until 1955, when it became independent and was placed under the Culture and Education Department of the City of Split.
Since 1991, the Gallery has been an integral part of the Ivan Mestrovic Foundation with the headquarters in Zagreb.
Its mission is to collect, protect, present, and professionally and scholarly treat the museum material and documentation relating to Ivan Mestrovic's life and work.
