Getting there: By highway E6 at Hjemmeluft, at the western end of town, 2.5 km from Bossekop if you approach Alta from southwest. A local bus connects Alta bus station with the rock carving area. 8 km from Alta Airport.
Alta Museum is located near the most extensive area of prehistoric rock carvings in northern Europe.The area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. The rock carvings are estimated to be 2500-6200 years old. The most prominent and accessive works are connected by a network of pathways to the public and the colors have been retouched by researchers. Alta Museum features exhibits on local history and Sami culture. Café and souvenir shop, playground for children. |

The Sami Collections (De Samiske Samlinger) is a national museum for the Sami culture. The museum has exhibitions and it collects, takes care of, explores and procures the Sami culture history. On the museum area there is also an open-air museum with an old catching establishment for wild reindeer and an exhibition of old Sami accommodations.
