Perm State Art Gallery (PSAG) is one of the biggest art museums in the Ural region. Its collections number about 43000 items. They contain works of the 15th-20th c. Russian and West European art of various artistic schools, styles and trends. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, applied and folk art of Russia and Europe are widely represented. The gallery possesses collections of antique ceramics, ancient Egypt arts, and Tibet bronze objects as well as works of applied arts from Japan, India and China.
PSAG was opened in 1922. It is housed in the former cathedral church of Christ Transfiguration, the architectural monument of the 19th c. Since the early days of its existence the gallery has become the regional artistic center. Since 1925 the gallery exhibitions of contemporary Ural art, the prototype of the future regional art exhibitions, have been held. In 1929 the first Russia department of the contemporary art was opened in the museum. It laid the foundation for the 20th c. native art collection acquisition.
In this large museum you can also find pictures and icons, ceramics and other works of art.
Religious wooden sculpture is an outstanding phenomenon in the Russian art. Together with icons and objects of decorative applied art it constituted an integral part of artistic ensembles of Russian churches and chapels. The earliest memorable sculpture objects survived to our days date back to the 14th-15th c. The 16th-17th c. was the golden ages of wooden plastic art of the old Russia. In the 17th c. along with the other kinds of cult arts the art of sculpture acquired its new particular features.
The unique wooden sculptures in the collection of Perm State Art gallery fully reflect the evolution of Russian sculpture art. Being one of the most well known museum collections of this kind in Russia it was formed in the 1920-40s as a result of expeditions to the northern territories of Perm region. They were initiated by A.K.Syiropyatov who soon left for Moscow and were continued by N.N.Serebryennikov. The present gallery collection numbers as many as 400 wooden sculpture items.
